Project Crimson Venom
A 1-of-1 Shelby GT500 Technical Showcase
At Diecast Hut, our “1 of 1” philosophy means every build is a unique engineering project. We used a Rapid Red 2021 Shelby GT500 for reference and moved beyond basic customization into high-level automotive finishing and micro-detailing.
Before the first drop of paint, we analyzed the factory metallic depth of the real GT500. To mirror this at 1:64 scale, we designed a multi-stage candy process that reacts to light with the same intensity as the full-sized predator.
Phase 1: Mechanical Deconstruction
The journey begins with a full teardown. We started with the factory casting—the stock black Hot Wheels GT500. Leveraging precision techniques, the factory rivets were drilled out, and the base was tapped to accept M2 Allen head screws. This allows for a clean reassembly and professional servicing of the build. I also swapped out the red glass with tinted glass.
Once deconstructed, the body was stripped to it’s original zamac finish and prepped with a medically clean alcohol bath. This ensures the AutoBorne Sealer achieves a permanent bond with the casting.

Phase 2: The Crimson Venom Finish
The “Crimson Venom” look was achieved through meticulous layering. After the white sealer and high gloss white paint were applied, we used 3M Vinyl fine-line tape to mask the signature racing stripes. We then applied several coats of Candy2o Blood Red mixed with 4050 Gloss. I waited approx. 30 minutes before pulling the tape to ensure a perfect edge without bridging.
Phase 3: Custom Decal Engineering
Standard decals don’t cut it for a 1-of-1 build. I designed a custom decal kit from scratch using GIMP to ensure every logo and vent matched the specific proportions of this casting. Getting the scale right required some trial and error to nail the 1:64 measurements.
The final graphics were printed on clear waterslide decal paper using a color laser printer for maximum sharpness. These were applied with precision setting solutions before being locked under a mirror-finish 2K Automotive Clear.
Finally, we took the “Crimson Venom” into the studio for a proper photo shoot.
